How to Safely Tow a 5th Wheel Vehicle

Published March 22nd, 2023 by Camel Towing

Towing a 5th wheel can seem intimidating, but with the right equipment and technique, it can be done safely and easily.

Here are the basic steps for towing a 5th wheel:

  • Ensure you have the right equipment: You will need a truck with 5th-wheelel hitch installed. The hitch is mounted in the bed of the truck, and the trailer is attached to it. Make sure the hitch is rated for the weight of your trailer.
  • Connect the trailer: Back your truck up to the trailer so that the hitch is directly under the pin box on the front of the trailer. Lower the trailer onto the hitch and make sure it is securely latched.
  • Check the brakes and lights: Make sure the brakes and lights on the trailer are working properly before you start driving. Remove and store any wheel chocks.
  • Adjust your driving: Towing a 5th wheel requires some adjustments to your driving style. You will need to take turns wider and make sure you allow plenty of room for braking. You will also need to drive slower than you would without a trailer.
  • Practice backing up: Backing up a 5th wheel can be tricky, so it's a good idea to practice in an open area before you hit the road. Use small adjustments on the steering wheel to make sure the trailer goes where you want it to.
  • Be aware of your surroundings: When towing a 5th wheel, you will have a much longer and wider vehicle than you're used to. Make sure you are aware of your surroundings and avoid tight spaces and low-clearance areas.

By following these basic steps, you can safely and confidently tow your 5th wheel to your destination.
